Details

The frient Intelligent Smoke Alarm (SMSZB-120) is a Zigbee 3.0 battery-powered optical smoke detector with a built-in 85 dB siren and temperature sensor.

The device uses optical detection to identify smoke particles in the air. When smoke is detected, it activates a local audible alarm and reports the alarm status to the connected Zigbee system. Operation of the local siren does not depend on an internet connection.

The built-in temperature sensor measures between 0 and +50 °C with a resolution of 0.1 °C. Smoke alarm status, test status, temperature, and battery status can be displayed in a smart home system through a compatible Zigbee hub. An alarm event can trigger a mobile notification or another automation.

The Intelligent Smoke Alarm is powered by one replaceable CR123 lithium battery. According to the manufacturer, the expected battery life is approximately three years with status reporting every five minutes. The device connects to the network as a Zigbee end device.

About frient

frient is a Denmark-based company that develops and manufactures Zigbee-based smart home devices. Its product range includes door and window sensors, motion sensors, temperature and humidity sensors, air quality sensors, water leak detectors, vibration sensors, smoke and heat alarms, smart plugs, energy meters, and other smart home accessories.

frient products use the standard Zigbee 3.0 protocol, making them compatible with a wide range of Zigbee gateways. They are supported by Home Assistant, Zigbee2MQTT, ZHA, SmartThings, Homey, and many other Zigbee-based systems. Available features may vary depending on the gateway and its device support.

Key Product Features

  • Optical smoke detection: The device uses an optical sensing method to detect smoke particles entering the sensing chamber.
  • Local audible alarm: When smoke is detected, the built-in siren produces an 85 dB alarm at a distance of 3 metres.
  • Zigbee alarm status: The smoke detection event is reported to the compatible Zigbee hub.
  • Temperature measurement: The integrated sensor measures ambient temperature between 0 and +50 °C.
  • Remote notification: The connected smart home platform can send a mobile notification when smoke is detected.
  • Automation event: The alarm state can be used to control other sirens, lighting, or additional compatible devices.
  • Self-test: The device can be tested using the local test button, and the test state can be displayed in supported integrations.
  • Battery monitoring: Reports battery level and low battery voltage status to the Zigbee system.
  • Replaceable battery: Operates with one standard CR123 lithium battery.
  • DIN EN 14604 certification: The device complies with the requirements of the standard for smoke alarms used in residential buildings.

Smart Home Protocols and Platform Compatibility

  • Zigbee 3.0: Uses low-power wireless communication. A compatible Zigbee gateway or coordinator is required.
  • Zigbee end device: Connects to the Zigbee network as a battery-powered end device and transmits its own sensor, diagnostic, and battery data.
  • Home Assistant: Supported under the Works with Home Assistant programme. Can be used in a local system with a compatible Zigbee coordinator.
  • Zigbee2MQTT: Supported as model SMSZB-120. Smoke alarm status, test status, temperature, battery level, battery voltage, low battery status, fault indication, and reliability status are available.
  • MQTT integration: When Zigbee2MQTT is used, sensor and diagnostic data can be handled through MQTT messages.
  • ZHA: Can be connected to a local system through the Home Assistant Zigbee Home Automation integration.
  • Samsung SmartThings: Can be used with a compatible SmartThings Zigbee hub. Availability of smoke alarm status and other data depends on platform device support.
  • Homey: Can be used in smoke, temperature, and battery-based flows through the frient integration.
  • Local operation: When used with Home Assistant, Zigbee2MQTT, or ZHA and a local Zigbee coordinator, status data can be processed without an internet connection.

Smart Features

  • Smoke alarm status: The system displays when the device detects smoke.
  • Push notification: The selected platform can send a mobile notification when an alarm event occurs.
  • Alarm automation: Additional compatible sirens, lighting, blinds, or notification workflows can be controlled when smoke is detected.
  • Temperature display: The measured temperature can be displayed and logged in the smart home system.
  • Temperature-based automation: The temperature value can be used as an automation condition.
  • Temperature calibration: In Zigbee2MQTT, software correction of the measured temperature can be configured.
  • Test status: A local self-test can appear as a separate state in a compatible system.
  • Remote siren activation: When Zigbee2MQTT is used, the built-in siren can be triggered through an automation or manual command.
  • Siren duration: In Zigbee2MQTT, the maximum duration of a remotely triggered alarm can be configured between 0 and 600 seconds.
  • Fault indication: In supported integrations, a device malfunction can be displayed as a separate state.
  • Reliability status: Zigbee2MQTT can provide diagnostic reliability information from the device.
  • Battery level: Remaining battery capacity can be displayed as a percentage.
  • Battery voltage: Supported integrations can display current battery voltage in millivolts.
  • Low battery status: The need for battery replacement can be used as a separate notification condition.
  • OTA firmware update: Wireless firmware updates are supported through Zigbee2MQTT.
